Born in 1962,Mahmood Yakubu is a Nigerian Educator and the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Yakubu hails from Bauchi, Northern Nigeria. He attended his primary education at Kobi Primary School while his secondary education at Government Teachers College, Toro.

Education

After his high school education, Yakubu proceeded to University of Sokoto, the current Usmanu Danfodiyo University where he read History.

Mahmood Yakubu is the only Northern student to have a first class degree certificate from the department of History.

Later, he attended Wolfson College, Cambridge where he studied international relations at postgraduate level, graduating in 1987.

Also, In 1991 Yakubu studied Nigerian History at Oxford University. Following his brilliant academic records, Bauchi State Government awarded him scholarship to study at University of Cambridge.

He is a recipient of the Common Wealth Scholarship from the Association  of Commonwealth Universities.

Professor Yakubu is a lecturer, guerrilla warfare expert, and Professor of Political History and International Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Before his appointment as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood served as the executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

He was appointed to office in 2007 by then-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. During his time, a National Book Development Fund was established.
