Godwin Obaseki Biography — Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki (born 1 July 1957) is a Nigerian politician, Businessman and currently the Governor of Edo State.

He is elected governor under the platform of the All Progressive Congress in 2016 where he defeated PDP’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Godwin Obaseki Biography & Education

Obaseki was born in Benin City, Edo State. He is the third child of Late Roland Obaseki and Stella Osarhiere Igbinigie.

He attended St. Matthew’s Primary School for his primary school education and later proceeded to Eghosa Grammar School, for secondary education.

Higher Education

Thereafter, Godwin Obaseki proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his Bachelor Degree in Classics.

For his National Youth Service Coup, Obaseki served in Jos, Plateau state. Later he left Nigeria to the United States where he obtained MBA in Finance and International Business from Columbia University and Pace University.

Career

Godwin Obaseki Obaseki began his career as a stockbroker woth Capital Trust Btoker Limited, Lagos in 1983.

Later, he proceeded to work for the International Merchant Bank. However in 1988, her moved to AVC Funds Limited, Lagos where he served as a Project Manager.

He moved back to New York and worked as a Principal of Equatorial Finance Company, a Financial Advisory firm.

In 1995, Obaseki founded Afrinvest West Africa Limited formerly known as Securities Transactions & Trust Company Limited (SecTrust).

Political Career

Godwin Obaseki stepped down as Chairman of Afrinwest to contest for Governorship in Edo state in 2016.

Before becoming the Edo State Governor, Obaseki served as the Chairman of the Economic and Strategy Team (EST).

On 29 September 2016, Obaseki was elected as the Governor of Edo State under the platform of All Progressive Congress.

During the 2020 Edo Gubernatorial Election, Obaseki sought for re-election under the APC but was controversially disqualified by the party’s Primary Election Screening Committee.

The committee cited missing National Youth Service Corps Certificate. Before the disqualification, the Governor had a running conflict with Comrade Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the APC, who headed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at the time.

Also it was alleged the committee had aim of denying the governor a second-term ticket under the APC. However, Adams Oshiomhole was later sacked as National Chairman of the APC.

On 16 June 2020, Obaseki resigned his membership from All Progressive Congress and decamped to People’s Democratic Party on June 19,2020.

He also declared his intention of seeking re-election under the PDP platform following his feud with his former part APC.

On 20 September 2020, Godwin Obaseki was declared the winner of the Edo Gubernatorial election by The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
