Kashim Shettima Biography —  Kashim Shettima Mustapha) is a Nigerian banker, politician and the Vice President-elect of Nigeria.

Previously, he served as the Governor of Borno state from 2011- 2019. He was the Senator of Borno Central since 2019.

Vice President of Nigeria Kashima Shettima was born in to the family of Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe on 12 September 1966 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria.

Shettima attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. For his secondary school education, he went to Government Community Secondary School, Biu in southern part of Borno State from 1978 to 1980.

Later, he transferred to Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum, now Yobe State. There, he completed his secondary education in 1983.

After schooling, Shettima entered business and banking industry while  rising to hold several high-ranking executive positions at various Nigerian banks.

However in 2007, he left his banking position at Zenith bank to join then Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff cabinet.  After serving for four years, he was elected Borno State Governor.

After his eight years in office between 2011 – 2015, Shettima got elected as the Senator of Borno Central constituency in 2015. Shettima withdrew from the nomination to become Tinubu’s running mate in 2023 despite being renominated for senate and got replaced by Kaka-Shehu Lawan as senate nominee.

Education

Shettima attended University of Maiduguri where he earned a Degree (BSc) in Agricultural Economics in 1989.

He had his one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the defunct Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank, Calabar.

From 1990 to 1993, Shettima was a Lecturer with the Department of Agricultural Economics at University of Maiduguri. He obtained a master’s degree (MSc) in Agricultural Economics from University of Ibadan.

Career

From 1993, Shettima move to the banking industry. He worked at Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as head of accounts unit at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Later, he moved over to the African International Bank Limited as a Deputy Manager and rose to the Manager position in 2001. Shortly after, he lived to Zenith bank.

At Zenith bank, General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East) before leaving for his political career. Shettima started his political career after his appointment as the Commissioner for Finance in Borno State.

Political Career

From 207 – 2011 Shettima served as a commissioner in various ministries in Borno State. Following the death of ANPP governorship candidate Modu Fannami Gubio by gunmen, Shettima was made the candidate for the party in February 2011.

In 26 April 2011, Shettima won against People’s Democratic Party candidate Muhammadu Goni with 531,147 votes against 450,140 votes.

Folloring his eight years tenure as Borno State Governor, he became the winner of the Borno Central Senatorial District election replacing Babakaka Bashir.

2023 Presidential Election

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, choose Kashim Shettima as his running mate  in 2023 presidential election.

On March 1st, The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election. While Kashim Shettima as the Vice President.
