Breaking: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala elected the WTO, Director General

Ngozi Okonjo -Iweala has emerged as the director general of the World Trade Organization.

The former minister of finance, beat her Korean competitor with a 104 poll votes from 164 member countries to defeat her South Korean rival, Yoo Myung hee, in the final stage of the race.

Okonjo-Iweala broke the record to become the first African to win the office of Director General office at the WTO.

She is also the first female Director General of the World Trade Organization.

Okonjo-Iweala received widespread support from Africa and other continents before the election which took place today October 28.

Her candidacy was backed by European Union member nations against her rival Ms. Myung hee, who was supported by the United States.

The official announcement is expected to be made by the WTO at 3pm Nigerian time today.

66 year old Okonjo-Iweala, was the Nigeria’s first female Finance and later Foreign Affair minister.

She also has a 25-year career behind her as a development economist and international finance expert at the World Bank.

She is also on Twitter’s board of directors and is a special envoy for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 fight.
