Dino Melaye Biography

Nigerian politician and businessman Dino Melaye was born in to the family of Mr Jonah and Mrs Comfort Melaye on January 7, 1974 in Kano State.

He attended Abdulaziz Attah Memorial College, Okene for his secondary school education. Later, he graduated from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria where he studied geography in 2000.

While in the university, Dino led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Later, he  became the Secretary-General of African Youth Council and then that of the Commonwealth Youth Council.

Also, President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him to chair the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths.

Senator Dino Melaye is a native of Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Political Career

Dino was elected member of the House of Representative, to represent Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2011 general elections.

However, Maleye became popular after he criticized  president Goodluck Jonathan’s administration while he was at the Lower House.

On April 28, 2015, Dino  contested and won the election as senator representing Kogi West Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Later in February 2019, he was re-elected to return as senator representing kogi-West senatorial district to be a member of the 9th Senate.

However, he was challenged by Senator Adeyemi of the APC who approached Election Petitions Tribunal asking the tribunal to annul the election of Melaye.

In 23 August 2019 the tribunal sacked Melaye and ordered a re-run election. This led to Dino having several confrontations with the Federal Government and his State Government.

Nevertheless, Senator Melaye lost his Appeal to retain his senatorial seat on 11 October 2019.

Also,  a re-run election was immediately ordered to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

But Melaye petition INEC for his rerun election to be conducted on same as the Governorship election.

This happened after INEC had move for the election to be conducted on a later date different from the State governorship election.

Following the rerun election, Senator Dino lost with a margin of over 20,000 votes to his political opponent, Smart Adeyemi.

Later, the election was declared inconclusive by INEC due to violence and electoral irregularities in over 50 Polling Units in the senatorial district.

A makeup election was however fix to 30 November 2019. However, Senator Smart Adeyemi was able to defeat Senator Dino Melaye.

Smart Adeyemi got sworn in by the Senate President as replacement for Senator Dino Melaye.

Although Melaye is currently unmarried.  He was previously married twice. His first wife Tokunbo Melaye and his second wife Alero Falope.

Tokunbo, who was married to Dino for ten years, filed for divorce after reporting a domestic violence allegations against Dino.

Tokunbo accused him of beating her up and pointed a gun to her head. However, the couple have three children togther and are co-parenting.

Senator Dino Melaye is the son of Mr Jonah Eseyin and Mrs Comfort Melaye. His mother Comfort died on May 3, 2019.

He grew up alongside his six siblings. Two of his siblings  are Samuel and Shade Elizabeth Melaye.

Dino’s brother Samuel was the former chairman of the National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum.
